Clown Loach hiding

Thanks for the answers to the original question.

As far as selling them back is concerned, it's not my preferred outcome. I plan to get a larger tank for them as I quite enjoy them and would hate to give them back. But I think having it as an option so that they can still have a comfortable life, even with someone else, is nice. And as I said, they are still quite young and I know that they take quite a while to grow to their full size and well before that happens I will have a larger tank ready for them. My lfs, who as I said, loves these fish, recommended them to me (and I told them my tank size, other fish, etc) and they have been keeping clown loaches themselves for over thirty years. I appreciate all the advice, but I know for a fact that they have kept healthy clowns for a long time and I trust their experience and opinions.

And in any case I didn't expect to start an argument here.

Clown loaches can easily grow to 4 or 5 inches in a 38 gallon tank with reasonable water change scheduling. They aren't going to reach that size in a year, maybe in 2. I do realize why most people can't grow them to good size, but I don't sell them to people, personally, with a less than 3 foot long tank to start out with. I also don't sell them in groups of less than 3 and I encourage twice as many. They aren't constant swimmers that need a huge area to pace around in. Just enough to be able to shoal around and maintain water quality.

IMO, most clown loaches don't reach their intended size because most stores sell ich medications that are extremely hard on them and they are prone to it when fish aren't properly quarantined. Both for the loaches themselves, and for the later additions that are added to the tanks. Experiences will differ, though.

Don't worry wiseguy, I'm an evil fish store owner, it wasn't anything you caused ;). Good luck with your loaches! I've kept them for years and rescue any larger ones I can to live in the 240 display or my 190 at home, but obviously that's not good enough either ;).

Thanks. I'm not too worried about the loaches right now because they are not that big yet and I am hoping that within the next year or so I will be moved into a larger place that can accommodate a larger tank for them. Andy my current tank is 3 feet long. And I do have 3 of them, but my lfs recommended getting a couple more because at their current size they aren't too large. I also do weekly water changes of at least 30-40 percent. And no signs of ich so far, though I know they are sensitive to it. I think if it came up I would either make sure to find ich medication that is designed for "scaleless" fish or I would just medicate the tank by raising the temp and using aquarium salt.

Thanks again.
