I would like to get a few for my 180 gallon tank. However it makes me nervous that they are "supposedly" ich prone. Do you think this is just due to poor water quality on the owners part? Or are there other issues that seem to lead to the infection? Just interested in some opinions here!!

I've had lots of problems with ICH on clown loaches - both when my water has been fine and also occasionally when water changes have slowed down (when I go away).. The main thing I've learnt is NOT to medicate - they get worse, then they get skinny, then they die. So - next time it happens I'm definitely trying the salt and heat method.

My LFS (which has a really great/helpful guy there) actually stopped me buying one of his because he spotted that one of the others in the tank had ICH.

I'd still say - if you've got the space they are well worth getting. Very very entertaining fish - and fabulous if you have snails (mine cleared a tank in a day)

If you kept your water warmer, in the 80-82F range and choice tank mates that could live comfortably in that water, then they would probably be less prone to ich.

Ah yes - I'd forgotten the temp.. the first case I had was when my helpful lodger unplugged my heater to hoover and forgot to put it back in - I only spotted the massive temp drop about 4 days later. Nice. A rather rude 'touch these plugs and die' note got attached the the leads after that!
(I've also learnt to check thermometers when I'm feeding as a matter of course now)

I have had clown loaches for a while and have only had them get ich on time and I did medicate them and it helped. I used this stuff that is all natural and smells really bad and it worked like a charm, I'll have to get back with you on what the name of it was. But that was because of the stress they had from a massive temp change. If you have a good heater and are being fed right and what not than you should not encounter problems.

As of right now, the fish I have are tetras (serpae, blackskirt, neons), corys, scissortails, balas, and a common and bristlenose pleco. How high could I go on temp. with these guys (assuming it can help ward off ich) if I decided to get the clowns?

Im not as smart as most of the people on this website about fish. But I'd say 80-82 and you would be good. I have clowns, rosy barb, silver dollars, congo tetras, rhino pleco, and blue rams and have had mine at 82 since i can remember and they are fine. But I'd wait until some other people post that know more.

Plan on quarantining the loaches prior to introduction--and continue the practice on other new additions. This way you can effectively treat the loaches with heat and salt without impacting your other fish, and prevent ich from being introduced with later additions to the tank.
