I just recently got a a new 50 gallon tank and got with it 7 convict fish and 2 clown loaches. Ive put plenty of hiding places and my clown loaches must be hiding in one of them somewhere, i havent seen them for about a 2 days. And im a bit worried as if if they are eating their food, i have been trying to feed them bloodworms and flakes and i also have sinking food tablets and floating pellets. is it because there are so many convicts and is there anything i can do to make them come out or is it just natural?

Was the tank cycled? Clowns tend to hide when stressed, but are usually okay with semi-aggressive fish...But, if the tank is cycling, then the clowns could be stressed and hiding. Watch the tank after lights out to see if the come out--and I would feed them after lights out as well.

clown loaches seem to hide a lot..

i agree wid observing the tank when the lights go out, they don't seem to like the lights very much...

my clown loaches come out in the morning (bulbs are off), then disappears 30mins after the light has been switched on (near sunset)..

they come out again sometime before sunrise

if ur water conditions are fine then i think they are just adjusting to the tank..
they will learn to come out eventually :duh:

my clown loaches seem to feel the need to school with the rainbows...go figure. 2 of them anyway...the other one hides.

i didnt cycle the tank as i moved the tank from another house to my house which was already set up, so i needed to put the con and clown loaches in straight away, but some of the water and all the gravel was still in the tank.. the filter also wasnt cleaned so i think alot of the bacteria would still be in there

I have a clown loach, and they love to hide. They also sleep on their side, so do not get it confused with they being dead. I sometimes still wonder... I had a castle in my tank with an open door, the loach would hide in there all day long when the lights were on. Sometimes I found myself picking it up to see if the loach was in there, he also had a roommate at times (my pleco). I always see him for the morning feeding just after the light go on. If you want to see him more you can do what I do, I sometimes only light up half my tank, he doesn't mind the darker side.

I have 2 and LOVE em to pieces! GREAT fish! One hides all the time the other is out more often. But they are in & out all day. I went to Home Depot and bought some PVC elbows and put them in and they love hiding in it. How's your water parameters?

Tom

Hey Tom,
The water's fine, lol! I've had these clowns for almost 6 years now. I have a 4" diameter pvc 'Y' pipe in the tank that they love to hide out in. They do come out in the daytime occasionally, but generally, they like to be out and active when the lights are off.
