Ok i just picked up one of these guys at about 3 inches about a week ago. After reading that clowns are nocturnal, i was surprised to see him out and about during the day. He also eats zuchini like a pig. My only problem is that when i go into my room and he notices me, he runs into his hole, and stays there until i leave or stay very still for a while. Will he continue to be this shy? I walk softly not to make any noises, but the second he sees me hes off to his cave. Maybe i over-reacting, but i love his rings, and really want to see him out more without me having to hide myself from him....

In captivity, most fish will readily adapt to changes in lifestyle. Even loaches that are said to be nocturnal will eventually show up a lot even during daytime.

I've got two clown plecs that I've had nearly 6 months- one I never see and one that comes out immediately for bloodworm. They do eat courgette (zucchini) but never when I'm watching!

My clown pleco has hid under his driftwood for well over a month. Since I got him, he hasn't come out. But very recently, he's out and about at feeding time, and sometimes when there's no food to be had. Give it some time :)

Clown plecos need wood, for their diet. If you have some or get some you may see him out more clinging to the wood.

I've had my clown for about 1 1/2 now and he still never comes out.

One of mine will come out for bloodworm when the lights are on, the other one I almost never see except during tank-vac day. They're actually more shy now than they were when I got them! I agree with Reddog though- they eat copious amounts of bogwood.

I have a couple clown loaches and sometimes they are out and about quiet often and then sometimes I don't see them for a long time. Seems like after I do a water change is when they come out more. I used to have 4 of them and they loved to sleep in a floating log I had in the tank. It was so cute to watch them lay side by side in that log and one would always end up on his side and one would wiggle his tail like "Hey give me some more room you guys!" lol, they are such cute fish and so beautiful!

Try moving slowly up to the tank instead of just walking over. Don't get between the tank and any lights in the room on your approach. Slow and easy, so you don't swoop in like a potential predator. This way, he might not run for safety when you come in the room.

try turning off the lights in the tank but keeping them on in the room.. then just sit and watch... its how i get to see my pleco come out and pretend hes a cory....

its the silliest thing ever... 7" L083 shoaling around the tank with a handful of 1.5-2" cories....
