Aaah! Your favorite question "would these fish get along? blah blah blah?"

My 55 gallon aquarium has been a sitting duck for the past two-three years, I've only had a handful of platys and swordtails, a pleco, some bleeding heart tetras and a large school of zebra danios that were there for almost three years that have slowly dwidled. Mostly because I keep getting anxiety about buying wrong fish so I stick to what I know (platys and swordtails). I love the hobby and have read almost everything I can get my hands on, but want more real world experience.

I've always wanted clown loaches, and I know they get large and could have a large bioload for the capacity of the bacteria in my tank now. But I wanted to try angelfish and dwarf gouramis for awhile also. I also LOVE watching Tiger Barbs but know they'll keep me from getting too many of the fish I want so I'm waiting to get another tank just for them. So my real question is:

-- would having three clown loaches, some angelfish and maybe buying a few gouramis be ok, especially with my current fish? Is there any order I should add them in?

-- Also, anyone ever had any bad cases of clown loaches eating other schooling fish? My danios are pretty fast, but I don't want them becoming lunch or any other smaller schooling fish i get becoming lunch

Any one who has ever tried fish in this combination, your input most apprecaited :)

Ooh right now I have

7 tiny Zebra Danios
3 female sword tails
1 male sword tail (scrawny little guy)
3 female platys
5 bleeding heart tetras
1 rubbernose pleco

Honestly, 3 loaches would be too much for that tank; especially with mates. Another case of fun fish with big requirements. You might be able to pull of three loaches, 2 Angels and a gourami in a well-filtered 90 or a 125. Remember: a great way to decrease bioload is to filter using a sump or overflow. That will add gallonage to the environment. I have a friend that has a 75 with a 38 for a sump. That allows for much better water quality for his Discus.

I don't think clown loaches will eat small fish, but angels will. I've learned that the hard way recently after losing some new raspboras and rummy nose tetras.

clown loaches get to 12", which is far to big for your tank.

3 clown loaches, two angels, and a gourami would not work in a 90 or 125 gallon. clown loaches get to 12" long and like to be kept in groups of at least 5, and 180 gallons is a minimum. it totally depends on which gouramis you choose to go with angels. pearl gouramis and dwarf gouramis can work with angels. you can only have 1 male dwarf gourami in a tank. the other gouramis are to aggressvie for your tank the blue gourami (this includes the gold, platinum, three spot, and opaline gouramis) are very aggressive and will kill anything in the tank that is smaller than they are. kissing gouramis ge tto big for your tank.

you current stock will only work for a while with angels. the zebra dainos will most likely be eaten once the angels get big enough, and they are going to stress them out because they zoom around so much. if you want to add to your tank, the best things to add are 7 more bleeding heart tetras and then a pearl goruami.

BTW, the best way to decrease bioload is not add extra filters. it is to keep youe stock in a reasonable level.
