Hey I have 2 percula clowns and a scooter blenny. I'm thinking about going open top so my lighting will be alot better with my current set-up, if I put the top on, it blocks alot of the light going in from my new lights for my corals. Do clowns jump at all? i'm not really worried about the scooter since he's always at the bottom. -- I've never seen my clowns even go really near the top too much or attempt to jump at all. -- do you think they'd be allright without a top on? Thanks!!!

It depends on the individual fish, I have clowns in an open top that haven't jumped but I have had clowns jump. Most fish have a chance of jumping, some species are more likely than others and blennys/clowns are more likely to jump.

Fish usually jump at night or if something scares them during the day. If your clowns sleep towards the surface there is a higher chance they will jump out at night.
You could put a lid on during the night after lights out (if that is easy to do). Also most fish jump out at the corners, the freak out run along of the edge of the glass and jump when they hit the corner. So you could try somehow to secure the corners, and to a lesser extent the edges.

Also I have read that glass lids can block around 15% of the light but acrylic lids (depending on thickness) doesn't block as much, only a few percent. Also adding/building a hood will stop the fish jumping right out of the tank and not block any light.

I’ve never considered a clown a jumper…certainly not when compared to fire fish, some wrasse and some goby, which just love to carpet surf. I have never had a top on any of the tanks and never lost a clown to the rug.

If it's a comfort thing, I'd suggest using egg crate (light diffuser). That will allow light to pass and keep the fish in.
