Kind of makes me sick but on the front page of CNN.com there is a video about a pet store and the SPCA saying that there its ok. And of course the pet store owner justifying the that getting people interested in the hobby is more than enough reason to sell them.

that is disgusting! i have to say i am really suprised at CNN for not including information about the negative effects of dying.

Well, from what I see the SPCA person said that it is morally and ethically incorrect, but not illegal. Kinda like cutting in front of people in lines. You can't get arrested for it, but people who know better will look down on you. It is a fairly one sided piece though since it is obvious no one there has seemingly researched what they are talking about. I mean saying that they believe they have to be restrained is putting in mildly. You should see what they have to do to my cat to clean his teeth. Well last time they just drugged him, but then after he woke up no one at the vets office wanted to get within 5' of him. In the case of a 2" fish the poor things are pretty much defensless.

BTW no I am not a part of PETA and personally find a good portion of their upper management a disgusting group of hypocrits.

So torturing an animal is O.K. as long as someone gets some enjoyment from it. That is thourghly and absolutely discusting to put it mildly. What are they thinking?

Wow! I came over hear to post the link, and someone already beat me to it.

This works on the CNN site:

http://www.cnn.com/video/partners/c.../offbeat/2007/02/02/brason.tattooed.fish.wgrz

[email the story to yourself to get links like this].

Wierd part of the story: the NY SPCA thinks dyed chicks are "illegal", but tattood/dyed fish ain't. We've raised a few batches of chicks (have some in the chicken coup right now tunring kitchen scraps into eggs), and I don't see how putting some food coloring on them would harm them in any way; kinda like the teenage girls that put spray glitter on their horses.

We should look at this as a step in the right direction. It will drive public awareness... both good and bad. I think what would be appropriate is if you write a note to CNN or MSN and complain about the practice, in a proactive mature manner. Providing them that link to the death by dyeing site might also be a plus.

Perhaps if they get enough responses, they'll do a follow up article or even a prime time news blurb about it and look at the negative side of the practice more closely.
