I just received my diffuser today, and about to make the mixture. How do I tweak the recipe for a 5.5 gallon or is the mixture fine? I also bought a check valve, and is this really all there is for a homemade CO2? All I do is mix the recipe, hook up the diffuser and check valve and let it set till it bubbles, and I than know it's working? Also how often should I change the mixture?

No need to adapt the recipe unless you just want to reduce the CO2. A typical recipe will last a few weeks depending on the temperature where it is operating. The hardest part for making CO2 is getting a good seal on all the components so it actually goes to the diffuser.

So all the components I have right now, is all I need? I made a hole enough to put through the hose and still let it still be air tight.

Also for example, say you had CO2 running for 2 months and completey cut it off for a long time. Any bad effects?
