I was reading in Tropical Fish Hobbyist that half a coconut shell with a notch for an entrance makes an excellent hideaway. I imagine as long as you drain the coconut, shell out the fruit, sand the hair and possibly boil it for 15-20 minutes it would be safe. Has anyone ever tried this?

Many experienced breeders use coconut shells as breeding caves for dwarf cichlids and other cichlids. Tropica also sells a coco-cave with windelov fern growing on it, I currently use my own version made by boiling old shells and attaching java moss to it.

Doesn't patrick from spongebob live in a 1/2 coco nut?:)

yep, but spongebob lives in a pineapple, so its not necessarily safe for fish, not that you were implying it tho

no, but my friend just got the SB kit for her 2 yr old, complete with fake pineapple and even plastic jellyfish that "swim" in the current!!!!!!!!! sorry were going :offtopic:

The potential stain is probably similar to that from many driftwood varieties. After boiling the coconut shell I noticed a similar smell and color to the water. Attaching java moss is a good idea!!

What does squidward live in?
