i have 1 male betta in a 3 gallon planted tank and i live in northern CA. i rarely keep the heater on in the house because i hate being hot. will he get cold?if so, how can i keep him warm?...and even if he does get a little cold will he die? :help:

How cold ?
He might not die (well depends how cold) but being cold for a betta = stress. Stress can lead to being susceptable to infections or disease - and then who knows what.

Stable is important too. A constant temp with only slight fluctuations is th best thing for a betta 9and many types of fish). I believe that there are tiny heaters available for smaller tanks. WalMart used to sell them and some fish stores do. Otherwise upgrading the tank to a 5 gallon will allow you to put a normal sized 25 watt heater on it.

I used to keep my bettas at room temp but they always seemed to get some disease. Now that I keep them at elevated temps things are much better.

I've found that when I moved my first betta from an unheated 1 gal to a heated 5 gal, he was much more colourful and active. I think temperature really makes a great difference.

I read somewhere that it's impossible to heat a tank less than 5 gallons safely, but other people say it can be done with mini-heaters.

It's not impossible, just a lot more challenging, and pricy. The difference in cost between a small heater and a small-medium is almost non-existant, and so peopel often get the larger heater, which is bad. A quality small tank heater is critical, especially with lit tanks, which oiften have incandescent bulbs that put out a lot of heat.

I'd probably go with a slightly larger setup that's more easily managed. The cost will be about the same, and the betta will be better off.

walmart sells a little 7.5 watt heater meant for tanks 2-5 gallons. its pre-set to 80 degrees and will shut off if it gets higher than 82 degrees automatically. it only costs about $7

it looks like this:

thanks so much every one i will go check that out..i was thinking about going with a 5 gallon but does anyone know why 5g always cost more than 10g's..??

I wish I knew!

With my first betta, I got a 5g without even looking at the 10 g because I assumed it would be cheaper.

Later on I realized the 10 g was cheaper. My current betta is in a 10 g.

at my lfs the 5g in 20 bucks and the 10g is 9.99..maybe the 5g has thicker glass?

If you have the room get the 10 gallon. Bigger is better and more stable. And in the future it would allow you to add some tankmates if you wanted, like some khulie loaches or dwarf cory catfish.
