Yea i have and still do and besides of the increase chance of breeding to me it helps in the growth spirts that some tend to have.

I don't really sweat the temp of my water changes - go by close enough is good enough personally.
I don't think its too much of a drop though - in nature these fish will always encounter cooler water periodically due to rainfall/currents what not.
I agree - it will certainly stimulate breeding in them - something to do with them perceiving it as fresh rainfall I think. It's like turning the lights down, pouring a glass of decent read and putting Barry White on the gramaphone...or the back of a '57 chevy after the prom depending on your vintage/country of origin/your mileage may vary.

lol same here except for settleing down . My fish are always on . Are Mbunas just more porlific than other fish?

Yep Mbunas are exceptionally prolific as regards breeding, given good clean water. They will literally spit 'em out endlessly. Probably rivalled in general only by convicts, who will get it on in a puddle of mud during an earthquake.

I use straight cold tap, though I dont have cichlids currently.
Besides the rain you also have to figure in that depending on where the fish is from, the water they swim in has different temps in different areas. Sunny areas are always warmer than shady areas on the surface of the water, also, the deeper you go the colder it gets. So many variables.

I think it is of pretty general application in freshwater fish, simulating the fresh cold rains that indicate that water levels will raise hence spawning is appropriate.
With hard to spawn freshwater fish some folks have success using a watering can to add the last few inches of water, increasing the reality of the simulation.
well the water i put in felt cold as hell. and it dropped the overall temp a little bit......absolutely nothing happened, am very disappointed.......
