Cold Water Fish Options

Stingray

We live in CT as well. My parents just bought a retirement home in Brooklyn,CT ( Yes Brooklyn). They want to do a small pond. My dad doesnt like Koi. What is a good fish or fishes for that matter that are low maintenance? Also could they be kept outside all winter? I dont think my parents would be interested in taking them in and out. Any suggestions?

How small of a pond? do you want to fish out of it or just look at the fish? The only fish I could think of that could be there all year is koi, or white clouds, and that is only if the pond is deep enough. YOu could also stock it with bass, bluegill, catfish, as mentioned before. Wether or not fish can be kept out all winter depends on the pond. If it is large enough and deep enough fish can be kept out there through winter, but if it isn't deep enough, they won't have anywhere to retreat from the frozen surface water and will die. The pond I mentioned in my last thread, that was in ohio froze over every winter, and the fish are still there.

Pond Size

This would be a very samll pond. Like one that has the plastic lining. So I guess there would need to be a winter option of bringing them in.

Depends on how deep you make it, and what part of NC you are in. If you get one that's 5-6 feet deep, and you're not in the mountains around Asheville, then you would probably be just fine. I live just across the hill from NC, and I don't think it would ever get cold enough here to freeze more than 1-2 feet.

You can also fight pond freeze a little bit with a pump. But being deep will be your best defense. It would get very difficult to bring in all the fish every year. I can't imagine being able to pull all of them out of a good sized pond even once, much less every year.
