My fish in my tank died over winter break. i want to get a snail to go in my tank along wtih a goldfish. what kind of snail can i put in a coldwater tank???

any kind, as long as it won't fit in the goldfish's mouth. mystery, apple, ramshorn, or nerite.

then again, what size is your tank? goldfish need 20 gallons, minimum just for one. 30g is better. if your tank is under 20g's, i would suggest several snails and a group of white clouds, a coldwater fish which stays on the small side. they are very active and fun to watch.

apple snails, and many other tropical snails, can live fine IME in CW tanks as long as the temp does not drop below 60 degrees. the only good non-hitchhiker CW snail in the trade is the japanese trapdoor snail, which would be the best and most ideal choice if it is avalible to you.

I wouldn't put any snail from the applesnail species (cana, brig, marisa, spixi, haustrum, etc...) in anything under 65 degrees if you want to keep them alive for long. All these snails are from tropical regions and prefer temps in the mid to upper 70's. Many of my customers remove their snails from their ponds during the colder months and put them in aquariums. If you must keep cold water snails go with MTS or Japanese Trapdoor Snails.
