Hi there,

I'm new to the forums, but very old to fishkeeping. I have a 100 gal [heavily] planted tank that has been running for 3 years. Several months ago I bought three Colombian tetras; one immediately died, and just last month I discovered that the remaining two had bred. Three tiny babies, all of different sizes. :) Happy accident.

Anyway, today I noticed that one of the adults has black streaks on one side of his body. A few on the other side, but it's maybe a ratio of 20 to 3. They are thin black jagged streaks, maybe only 4-5 mm long each on a 2" long fish. He (she?) does not seem to be affected by them, but I'm wondering if this is the start of what could be something bad? I can't find it in any of my books, nor in any of the diseases listed in this forum. Please help!

In case you need to know it, the most recent things I've done in my tank would be cutting anubias coffeefolia (sp?) into smaller plants (chopping a long rhizome into several plants, whatever that's called) a week ago. Pulling up the roots kicked up some gunk from the bottom, so I did about a 15% water change focusing on the clouds of stuff -- mostly fluorite and whatever is in eco complete. Gravel bed stays pretty clean. I also introduced several new fish from my aunt's tank (she's moving and can't take them) that same day -- an adult breeding pair of angels, 2 enormous clown loaches, a blue and an opaline gourami, a few danios and penguin tetras, and a LF black skirt. Nobody seems to bother anybody else, but the tank does look more crowded now than I'd like.

I will try to get a photo of the affected fish and post it here. In the meantime, has anybody heard of this before? :(

I don't have a clue, but I hope someone will... pics would help for sure.
