So four of my female guppies look ready to burst and I need to hurry up and set up a fry tank. I am not going to use any substrate for now and I am wondering how long it would take to colonate bacteria on a sponge filter pad. I am thinking of putting it in my main tank's filter.

That would be the quickest way. It should be ready in a couple of days or so. Are you using live plants in there? It would be great to have some floating plants in your fry nursery.

:iagree:

Plants will help reduce stress on the fry.

My molly and tetra fry usually hang out either in my floating hornwort plants, or in the java moss in the corners of my tanks.

With the frequent feeding fry need..your best bet will be to siphon out uneaten food and daily water changes...
