my keyhole cichlid is going from dark to light and light to dark why could this be

Colour change is usually an emotional response...Fish that are excited, scared, being agressive, ready to breed etc can display a number of colours or go very pale depending on their mood.

Most likely stressed?
Does your cichlid dart around when you enter the room?
Is the tank placed where a lot of people come and go?

Keyholes turn dark when they are stressed. They are a nervous fish generally, so it could be a lot of things. Have you made any recent changes to the tank? Does your keyhole have places to hide?
