I'm starting a 75 gal fowlr is there any lighting benefit to painting the back of the tank black or blue

It hides the junk behind the tank, for one. It can also give better contrast to see the colors of the livestock.

I used blue for my reef, but black can look really good.

well, you can do what I did and stack liquor bottles behind it and then light those with rope lights and a black light (Looks wickeD cool!) My tank sits in the divider between my kitchen and my living room so I didn't really want to go with anything that was completely opaque.
Another thing that works good if you don't want to go with the regulare aquarium background or painting is fabric. Just go to your local craft shop and I gaurantee that you can find something that fits the look you want.

 My husband had an idea that worked really well for us. He works for a vinyl sign supply company. He came home one day with some of the adhesive backed vinyl like they use to letter signs, trucks etc.. and the tool with which to apply it. It was like applying contact paper to a shelf. Done in just a few minutes and looks really great.

Yeah, I just tape off and spray I love black backgrounds... infinity.... billions and billions......

did you use flat black or semi gloss?

I might try the vinyl.

Gloss, I think though it all comes out gloss since the surface you painting is extremely smooth.
