I've heard for tanks larger than 50g it is a good idea to put a colored background in the tank to hide the wall the tank is against. For example using a black background creates depth and gives the fish a sense of security. Does anybody else here use a background? If so do you put the backgound inside or outside the tank? Thanks

Good question, I've been thinking about adding a background to a smaller tank (20 gallon) and have been hesitant to get one.

The BG goes on the outside of the tank ... I have a black BG on my 20g and used the blue side on my new 75g.

My background right now is a pictuer with blue base with lots of plants laid over it. I'm planning to go to a solid color, probably black, some time soon. I do think the fish are more comfortable with it, and frankly I just think it looks better. In my opinion, color on the back of the tank - particularly a dark solid color - helps the fish, plants, and decor to stand out more.

I can't use those shiney backgrounds, because my betta goes WILD at it attacking and throwing himself against the glass. I don't want him to injure himself, so I just have light blue construction paper as my background for the moment until I can figure something better out.

We have the same BG on our 20 gal, on the 80 we bought a blue BG kind of dark blue fadeing to a lighter blue, any kind of BG will work, it all depends what looks good with a setup...

:hi:

I have a bg on my little 3 gallon ^^. I just got it because it's pretty, I wasn't thinking about the fish, lol. It's blue, and sort of holographic. And it matches the rest of my silly neon fake plants and such.

Oh, you know what my roomie just did? She bought some floam, and she got tired of it, so she smeared it over the back of her smaller fishtank. There's also a little heart of floam on the front in the top corner. It looks really childish, but I think it's cute!

our backgrounds on both the 55 and the 20 are rocks. The effect is pretty cool I think, and the one on the 55 blends in with all of the rocks for the cichlids

And it hides all of the cords

I have a pretty background with plants and coral on my 36g and another one with plants on my 5g. I tried to put a background on my betta Haley's tank and had to remove it he flared at it. My other betta doesn't mind the background his has green plants.
