coloring driftwood

I'll second the manzanita suggestion. I bought two nicely branched pieces that I want to invert to look like roots. It's a dark red/purple color, which is cheaper than if you were to buy it sandblasted. It's also a dense wood, supposedly extremely difficult to saw through.

sorry, but i don't like any of those wood suggestions. manzanita, cypress, none of them are what i'm looking for.

however, at the lake on sunday i saw a nice large branch sitting half out of the water. i couldn't get it yetsterday because it was raining really hard and we were both soaked and needed to get back to the dock, but we're going back next sunday and it will still be there.
