im wanting to change the gravel in my fancy goldie tank soon, and im unsure what would show them off the best, they are orange, yellow, silver and calico. i just cant decide :help:everyone elses tanks i see always look beautiful compared to mine and it really bugs me,i wonder if its just coz i have the time to sit and pick out everything i dont like about my tanks and i just see other peoples without finding things i dont like about the tanks. does everyone have a certain something they dont like about their tanks?

As a general rule, fish look their best with a dark substrate and background; not only is the contrast better, they actually show more color; a fish placed in a white bucket will quickly take on a 'washed-out' appearance, while a fish placed in a dark-colored bucket will usually intensify in color.

I usually use a simple brown gravel; I don't like the artificially colored stuff, both for aesthetic reasons and because the paint often comes free from the stones, leaving you with a few brown rocks amidst your colorful gravel and a few chips of paint floating around in your tank. I think goldies would look good with black sand as well.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,i did think about the black sand idea, but didnt know how goldies would take to it,at the moment they are in very old awful looking bland near white gravel with some old coloured(red and blue) bits mixed in-i didnt do it,it was like that when i got it from a friend-so it looks terrible, hopefully over the weekend il be shopping for something a whole lot nicer,i like the more natural look too, just had to wait for the money to do it,thanks for your quick reply x

I like natural (cheap!) river gravel. Sometimes found as all-purpose gravel in the concrete section of you local DIY place. About 4 bucks a 40 lb bag. rinse WELL...it's usually ugly in the bag but comes out nice.

Light colored gravel with Goldfish is a bad idea for other reasons, too...Unless you can train them not to poop on it.

Mine are in a 150 with a black and white mix of Estes' Marine Sand and a black background. Sand is definitely a good (I have found to be the best) option for goldfish (and all my tanks). There is an article on sand in my blog, or PM me for more information.

There are pics on my Photobucket page.

There are problems with gravel, see the article on goldfish in my blog for details. (or PM me)

thank you so much reptileguy, ive read your blog and am definately switching to sand, ive noticed a few times that the big goldie will get a piece of gravel in its mouth and will spend up to 5 minutes or so shaking her head trying to spit it out, will be changing asap!

I didnt think that gravel made such a difference. For my tanks, I use regular pea gravel from home depot. works well, fish look vibrant.

If you REALLY REALLY want your fish to glow, use powerglo lights. or maybe it was colorglo. the one thats more red is REALLY good.

I use 50/50 bulbs (half actinic and half 6500K). These provide bright lighting, enough for plants, with the balance of actinic to set off blues and provide a good, visually balanced but still bright white.

My friend used to have almost "radioactive" colored gravel in her goldie tank, I just helped her switch to black sand... you wouldn't believe the difference it made!
