Can someone educate me a little further on Columinaris? I've been having a concurrent problem with this affliction in my 10g . It seems that whenever there is any stressful condition, whether it be a new fish addition, a decor change, or even a fluctuation in temp. my ram comes down with it. I treat every time with coppersafe, which cures it quite quickly but I feel as though it must not kill the bacteria completely because it keeps returning.

How do I make it go away forever?? Should I do a complete overhaul and clean and remove everything? I don't think the ram will handle being moved very well. Any knowledge with this disease?

the most effective treatment for columnaris if the fish is still eating is medicated food containing oxytetracycline. Aquatronics makes such a food, as does Zeigler.

often however, the fish is not eating by the time symptoms are noticed. Antibiotics in the water would be the next treatment option. Erythromycin (Maracyn), nitrofurazone, nifurpirinol, acriflavine, chloramphenicol or tetracycline can be used to treat the columnaris itself.

however, a fish infected with columnaris often falls prey to a secondary infection which is resistant to both of these. therefore, a combination of Maracyn and Maracyn Two or tetracycline and kanamycin is recommended.

CONTINUE TREATMENT FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 DAYS.

copper sulfate for columnaris? i've never heard of its use in that regard.

Really? I've read that (coppersafe treatment) in a few places, and it works although I guess not well enough. I did do the antibiotics (maracyn and maracyn two) but only for 5 days and it did return. I guess 10 should do the trick then? Thanks for the advice!! Y'know, I just hate that cloudy water from the maracyn.... yuk :p:
ok, I'll do it, thanks again..

Columnaris is constantly present in the tank and with only emerge when the fish's immunity is weaked, ie due to stress. I would be careful with the overuse of antibiotics because, like with any bacteria, you may see the emergence of resistant strains, which would only worsen your situation. Use aquarium salt coupled with a gradual lowering of temperature whenever possible.

while salt and acidic bath treatments can be used to disinfect water containing F. columnare cells shed by infected fish, thus preventing the transmission of the disease, i don't believe salt will effectively treat bacterial cells which have reached the underlying tissue layers.

thanks for the article star .. i didn't know that potassium permanganate was useful for treatment of columnaris.

no probem.

I'm not a big fan of NaCl to cure or treat bacterial infections.

Thanks you guys... as usual, you guys are a wealth of info w/o the pretention...
