Columnaris outbreak

Thanks, Mel. I'm certainly hoping they'll pull through. The one Cory with
the spots is not improving - meaning his spots are still there. Though his behavior
is normal. The little Cory is getting more and more active. All
congos appear disease free.

I may put the Cory with the spots in a salt dip today to see if I can't weaken the organism to let the antibios finish them off.

Ended maracyn I last night along with dose 3 of maracyn II. Biofilter still intact. Parameters 0,0, 0< nitrates < 5.

Update: canceling the salt dip for the cory w/ spots. After a closer look this morning I discovered they have lost their solid appearance and look more like wet cotton balls. I'll take this as a sign of improvement.

When I had a columnaris out break in my tank I used a combination of Kanaplex (Kanamycin) and sulfa. Treated my whole tank for 1 week and it was gone and never returned. Good Luck as it can kill in a short matter of time. Keep a close eye on that one cory that has the wet cotton ball appearance spots as it may need a more vigorous treatment. Columnaris gets that appearance and is often mistaken for fungus which it is not.

Yeah - I know it's a common mistake. I gave him a salt dip today, as tonight was the last dose of their antibiotics. He is the only one with signs of infection. I'll probably give him another salt dip tomorrow and do a water change to clean it all up.

You may need to extend the antibiotic treatment for the cory if he still has any of the wet cotton lesions.

Don't leave that cory in that tank if he still has symptoms. There is a chance he has it systemically and will be near impossible to cure, but you won't know unless you try. If you stop the antibiotic he can still infect the others. In fact, I had a fish infect another in my hospital tank and they were both on antibiotics for different reasons. Yes, a rookie mistake but I learned from it.

Do a google for Jehmco if you can't find it locally. They deliver fast and their customer service is excellent, too. Try the kanamycin/sulfa combo as recommended above.

Thanks for the tip - I have him isolated now, since he's the only one that is still showing outward signs. The little cory with finrot is doing very well. No tail improvement, but his behavior is good. He searches for food now and swims around as best he can. The congos are all great - their colors have really brightened and they feed like CRAZY!

The sick guy is in a salt bath (1 T/gal) with some leftover antibiotics. I'll keep him in there until he gets all better. His behavior is good, still happy looking.

Thanks for the Jehmco link, too. I'll check it out!

Update: I isolated the little cory yesterday as he was showing signs of stress. Unfortunately, I lost him this morning. :(

The larger cory with spots is doing well in isolation. His behavior is as it always was: normal. Hopefully I won't lose him, too.

The main tank is doing great. Everyone is happy and the antibiotics are slowly clearing out of the water (it was very cloudy). I'll give it until after Christmas and then start adding more stock, provided it remains disease free.

Sad update

I came home today to find the big cory with the spots had gone to the aquarium in the sky. :( He looked bloated and kind of pink. I guess the f. columnaris had turned septicemic. Poor guy...I feel so bad. He was a good fish.

At least he's not suffering anymore - I'll add that to my list of things to be thankful for today (optimism - yay).
