i have another question, my tank has been up for awhile, 4 yr, it has live rock and a cc base, i have been useing a skilter skimmer/filter i was told that all i really needed was a good skimmer and not the h.o.t. filter, any thoughts?

First depending on the size of your tank, live rock is the way to go. As far as the filter, there is no need for one with live rock. Live rock is a natural filter. I dont know what type of filter that you are using, but most filters have a media for your biological filter to grow on. If these arent cleaned every so often, they can cause a high nitrate reading in your tank. But if you clean them, you also take a chance of losing the beneficial bacteria as well. Live rock can hold the bioligical filter for your tank easy. I would recommend 2-3lbs per gallon. With a few powerheads for circulation and a very good skimmer.
