ok, i can hear most of you yelling as you read this...
i've kept about 5 comet goldfish for a few months(arguably not comet, because even though the dumb fish store sold me comets, they have two very little, little bumps sticking from the top of their heads) and they were happy in a huge half wine barrel...maybe 40 gallons+ with lots of plants and a big oxygen pump and all....i figured they would be ok until they got bigger and i could get another barrel and split them up...
then the landlord decided to be a huge !@#$ and suddenly decide fish were part of the no pet lease and made me move them. so my roomie took my comets down to her san diego home with the barrel to a good mommy...*getting weepy* and i can only hope they are ok....
anyways, i had been keeping an extra comet by himself in a 10 gallon because he is sort of a mutated runt. his eyes are uneven, he lost his coloring so now he's completely white, and one side of his mouth is smashed in. don't ask, i didn't do it...i think he hurt himself when he was much littler. i was not planning on adding any more fish than the runty comet until this whole fish moving fiasco, so i took one more comet into the 10 g. ok i know that's a horrendous idea but how long do you think they can manage before i find one of them a better home? they're about three inches each including tail. i just don't know anybody yet that would PROMISE to put the comet in a bigger than 10 g...and i already have a betta and like 100 zebra danio fry in other various tanks at work. my boss would kill me i tried to set up another 10 g even.
sorry for the unneccessarily wordy post...
