Comet missing scales

I have had a comet goldfish for several months. He is vigorous, eating and growing well, with good fins. But he always seems to be missing a few scales about 3 rows down from his dorsal fins, and something back in the tail end. Any ideas what might cause this?

How long do you mean by several months, exactly, and what's your water like? If your goldfish didn't have good living conditions before you got him, he might still be recovering. Mine came to me with a few missing scales, and it took three months, perhaps four, before they grew back. I think that she was also anemic, which would have delayed healing.

I have had him 5-6 months now and he is generally vigorous and growing well. Close observation suggest to me that he likes to jam himself under his log and grub around in the gravel. Seems to me that it might be straightforward abrasion. I will try and re arrange things.

That could be the cause. If he is trying to rub up against things, I would also consider whether he might have external parasites. I believe many people like to treat any new goldfish for flukes.
