It's been a little while since I've had cichlids. I had converted my 100gal to saltwater as a trial run and been enjoying. I had even set my 55gal up. I recently scored 75gal rr tank that I'll be doing as a freshy again, I can't wait. I'm giving my 55gal to my sarge so he can setup for his kid.

I'll be going with Lake Malawi again and excited to get it so I can set it up. Previous tank owner is getting rid of his stock first, then I'll get it. Back of the aquarium was painted black already, and bottom drilled. I'm thinking a black substrate being either a sand or limestone(still have about 120lbs of black and white limestone in the garage.

Looking forward to getting my cichlids back again. I've honestly missed them while doing salt. My 100gal will stay sw, have a plan in the future for a 180+ gallon cichlid tank...

Welcome back!

Well, I'm going to be picking up my Wet/Dry either tomorrow or wednesday for the 75gal. I wasn't really expecting it, was hoping to find a way to work the Fluval 405's that I have with the tank overflow. oh well....staying to to my sig line, lol.

Can't wait. I think I'm going to take some time in aquascaping. Something with a black sand and tiered levels using small pieces of slate and silicon to make the retaining walls. HHard for me to picture a true layout w/o the tank in front of me. I definitely want to try planting with sword plants since I seemed to be successful with them before.

Anyone with ideas or thoughts? One concern is with the back of the tank already being painted black, do you think that in combination with the black sand would be too dark? Planning on yellow labs, demasoni, blueberries or those of similar coloring.

Black sand and black background is OK for me, but I would use light colored rocks as THR to create a nice contrast. Do you think sword plants will work with mbuna; have you tried that? I'm not sure it will work! What I like a lot is the combination of yellow labs and demasoni...they look awesome together!!!

Yeah, I always had success with the sword plants(bigger)...as long as it wasn't able to fit their mouths I was fine. Initially I just had problems with them pulling the plants up vs eating them. When I figured out to root them better, it was no longer a problem. I just got the email back from the guy with a 180gal for cheap, hopefully goes through, that would be a sweet cichlid setup. If I end up with the 180, I'll continue with my black sand with slate tiers, but have a way to figure a holy rock structure offset to one of the side for hiding and obstacles....I'll be getting rid of the 75, just have to see if I'll go for a bigger wet/dry for the 180 or would two fluval 405's be adequate? I wanna do this right from the start. Not too concerned of wires as the back of tank would be painted.

Project just got bigger...sigh...lol....I've committed to the 180. So will be doing a tank shuffle. Need to by a uy a sump for the 75. Going to transfer the 100gal contents to the 75gal for a sw setup. 100gal will be sold as well as the two fluval 405's. I'm giving the 55gal to my Sgt so he can setup a small cichlid tank for his kid. So I'll have a 180gal cichlid tand and 75gal salt...lol...I hate fish, hate'em enough to do this for them...lol.

Great, have fun with those new tanks!
