Hi!

I have a 15 gallon Hex Aquarium. I have 4 Black Skirt Tetras in the tank and would like to know if I could mix them with a few Commet Gold Fish. I have never had goldfish before. I have three other tanks full of tetras. If this is possible, are the Commet Gold Fish the smallest I could get?

Also, being this is a Hex Aquarium, is it too long for my cory cats to travel to gulp air?

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks so much! :)

No, comets grow rather large and need adequate space to do so, a 15 gallon hex isn't suitable. Your hex is not quite big enough for any variety of goldfish. Goldfish do much better in long tanks, minimum would be a 20 gallon for fancies such as moors or bubble-eyes - that's to start with, upgrading tank size is necessary for optimal health and growth long term. Goldfish tend to be a bit of work...

I've kept cory's in a 100 gal, depth is more than that of your 15 hex so I wouldn't worry about them.

How bout adding a pair of dwarf cichilds, like rams or apisto's ? 15 gallons isn't all that much water so you're pretty limited on what you can do.

Thank you very much for your input you two. I appreciate it very much, as I am not verse on goldfish, and I certainly do not want to give them an early death. So, goldfish are out and I am okay with it.

I guess I will stick with the tetras, get some colorful neons to keep the Black Skirts happy.

Again, thanks for the advice! :)

Sure Poots, the rams no problem, the apisto's... most likely. It's recommended that these two should be place into a system with a lower pH, 7.0 and lower... I've not kept apisto's so I can't say but rams seem to do ok at a higher pH. There are so many dwarfs to choose from, I just threw out those two off the top of my head. Have a look at the Krib http://www.thekrib.com/Apisto/ , if you're interested in dwarf's this is a good place to start.

Cory, I said a "bit of work" I don't recall mentioning any stuggles...? You and I might have no issues with keeping gf, good for us, but other's might not understand what's required for their care in order to thrive... Mostly I keep koi, gf are EASY in comparison. Each species of fish comes with it's own set of needs, gf are not a beginner fish - I think you and I can agree on that. I also agree with you that given the proper space, filtration, feeding, etc., they are a breeze to take care of.... with a "bit of work".
