Common Goldfsh Question

:)Hey! Can anyone answer this? Do common goldfish live short lives if they're in a large goldfish bowl and fed TetraFin Fish Flakes, but have no filter? (I change the bowl every other day.) My 2 goldfish have only been living for 15 days. Anyway, I don't even know thier genders!

yes, ultimately they will.

common goldfish can, given decent care and living conditions, reach a size of 14+ inches long and live for over 20 years. decent care means a large fishtank of at least 55 gallons per common goldfish, or a suitable pond. it also means having real filtration in their tank or pond. a bowl is simply not a good home for any fish, especially goldfish. they are some of the most misunderstood fish in aquaria, simply because people are not told how big they should get, how long they should live, and how they should be taken care of. 1-2 years is not a normal lifespan. they do not grow to the size of their container and live normally otherwise - instead they become stunted, stop growing, and die either from the stunting itself or from secondary infections or bad water conditions.

welcome to Aquaria Central. Please use our site to research the needs of your fish. If you find that after doing your research you cannot keep the fish, please find them new homes or return them ASAP. if you want to continue in the hobby with other fish, look into getting a tank set up with a filter and a heater. we can then help you decide which fish are suitable for the set-up you have.

also please read the sticky in the freshwater newbie section about cycling your tank. a 'sticky' is a thread that always stays right up near the top. it will help you to understand one of the reasons why a bowl is not a suitable home.

Depending on the room temps and bowl size, you could house a betta instead.
Preferably the bowl should be at least 2 gal ( going by common min. size for bettas).

please ask your mom to join us here and read what we have written about your fish. even if she doesn't want to keep them (and I can understand - apartments are a pain in the behind sometimes, and the fish hobby can easily become expensive), she can certainly help you to find good homes for them. ask her to help you put an ad on craigslist in your area (craigslist.org) to see if anyone with a nice pond wants a couple more goldfish for it.

once the fish situation is solved, ask your mom to find out if fish are okay. some places that don't allow cats or dogs will allow fish, though they usually have a limit on the size of the tank. of course i don't know if you have specifically asked about fish already, but if you haven't then it won't hurt to try.

giving them to your grandparents may be a very good idea, but only if they are willing to do water changes on the tank weekly and maintain it (clean gravel and filters, treat the fish if they get sick). also, for your two common goldfish, you'd need at least a 75 gallon tank to keep them both for their whole lives.

Sorry, My mom really wants to get rid of the goldfish and doesn't want anything to do with it. But then she finally I could keep Moop and Oliver, if I memorize my 50 states and thier capitals. (I need to know that this summer, for 5th grade. So I memorized them. Now I just took a pic of them because my dad said that this is the last pet I'm going to have until we can afford a house. So I'll never forget my fish. When we finally get a house my dad said that I could get any pet I want. But I hope he buys a filter for the fish I want.
