Common Goldfsh Question

Hi Rona,
If you really care about these fish, it's a better idea to find a new home for them than to let them die!
Your fish need a much bigger tank, plus a filter, and that means a lot more work for you and your parents! Those things will cost a lot more money, too. My filter cost $100!
I think the best idea for you is to find someone in your area that has a pond. They can take your fish and make sure they live a healthy, happy life. The pond owner might even let you take your fish back when you move into a house and you can afford a big tank.
You can try posting an ad in the newspaper, or in the Recycler online classifieds. Ask your mom what she thinks is the best idea. Even if she thinks that is too much work or will take too long, you can still take the fish to your local pet store.
Good luck!

geez. :shakehead: :screwy:

Goldfish are bred by the millions and culled by thousands everyday; goldfish are used to feed other fish alive and sold for pennies... Filter or no, people's goldfish get sick ... how many "my goldfish is sick -- HALP!!" threads are posted in this forum everyday? lay off the (soon to be) 5th grader and ...

LET THE CHILD ENJOY HER GOLDFISH WHILE SHE HAS THEM, THE LAST PET SHE WILL HAVE BEFORE HER FAMILY MOVES INTO A HOUSE. :silly:

Rona
You sound like you already cherish your fish ;) and don't be afraid to ask for :help: it's not so serious. KEEP YOUR FISH AND HAVE FUN!!!

I don't really agree with you, first of all, the only reason why people post things like that is because they don't know how to take care of the fish properly and end up with it dying of either ammonia poisoning or stunting. Second, I have only seen about 5 threads saying that their goldfish is sick the whole time I've been here. Third, I keep 6 goldfish happily in a 250 gallon pond and never has anyone of them been sick.

And fourth, if she keeps her goldfish in an unfiltered bowl, it will likely die in the next 2 or 3 weeks, it would be a whole lot easier on her if she sells her fish, studies on them and buys other fish that are suitable for her.

I'm glad you are able to have 6 goldfish in a 250 gallon pond. Not everybody can be a lion tamer. Rona is 10 and helping her is one thing but the chorus chiming in just to get a jab on a child whose family has other things on their mind than a filter and tank for her fish

Keeping goldfish is easy, easy, easy, water change, water change, water change.. but I've killed my share. everybody in the hobby has, newbie to master. self-righteousness not necessary.

T/N, the whole point of an aquarium forum is to help newbies avoid these mistakes. Rona has posted asking for help and advice. Our job is to point her down the right track before her fish end up dead. The idea of the forum is to share information and learn from others' mistakes.
I think it's very important to encourage responsible fishkeeping, especially in young aquarists like Rona. Just because feeder goldfish die every day doesn't mean we shouldnt help Rona learn the right way to care for a fish. It doesn't matter what fish we're talking about. As a community of informed aquarists, it would be irresponsible and lazy of us to just say "let your fish die" when we can, instead, help Rona understand the requirements and responsibilities that come with an aquarium. Self-righteousness has nothing to do with it. It's a matter of sharing information and encouraging good fishkeeping practices.

Because her family has more on their minds than fish, I suggested she find a new home for the fish. That helps the family and the fish. No harm, no foul.

Furthermore - there are many posts about sick fish because when people have a crisis, they turn to the community for help. It's natural and it's a good thing! Many people don't have time to participate in the forum all the time, but when a fish becomes sick, they come because we are here and we are willing to help. Once again, if our collective experience can help someone in a crisis, I see no problem with that.

T/N I 110% disagree with you. Someone who actually cares about the fish should not be advising someone else to keep them in situations that are not suitable for the fish. Obviously Rona cares enough about the fish to ask us what is best for it (which is a very responsible thing to do :)) and the people here are trying their best to share experiences and knowledge to educate new comers to the hobby. Like flaringshutter said, the whole of this forum is to educate, not just to turn our backs on people who need help and want to provide the best possible lives for their fish. No one was bashing her just offering advice. I truly do commend you Rona for asking for help and trying to do what is best. Sorry your topic is turning into this. :(

If I do another post in response, it will just sound like :rant2: and everybody including me would just be :irked::wall:

No offense intended to anyone. A thousand apologies if anyone was offended :worthy:
