Common pleco longetivity?

I have a common pleco that is 12" and is ~2.5 to 3 years old living in a 29G (he was only 5" when I got him). He grew fast and this is the only tank he has been in - and it is HIS tank 
Note - age is when I got him so he might be closer to 4 years old actually.

How does he turn around ??? a 55 is even too small for that fish.
