i have had a 7 in pleco in a 55 gallon was in a 15 gallon but i want to find a mate for him or her... how fo i tell if its a male or female and how do i get them to mate

I don't know how to tell the difference between the sexes, but I do know that if you want to keep two adult common plecos together (plus any eventual babies), you are going to need a MUCH bigger tank. Common plecos get huge.

Plus breeding common plecos usually requires about a foot or more of mud in the tank so they can dig a breeding hole in it. I've heard it once or twice without the mud, but don't worry about trying to breed your pleco. Commons get huge!

If have seen a breeding pair at a hatchery near my place and they live in a heated pond the size of a small pool and they are about 2.5 feet long each.
Pleco need room to move. Don't get a mate unless you get a larger tank.

Even larger sometimes. We have an infestation here in 1 of our rivers, some of the extracted ones are somewhere between 2.5ft to 3 ft long. :eek3:

I wish I lived by a river with three foot long plecos...LUCKY you.

And also...would be better to get smaller plecos for that 55 gal to pair them up and breed. Their odontoids or body plates tends to more elongated. Simple explanation is male plecos look hairry.

Check out www.plecofantics.com for more good info and some people there have bred them.
