I went to a fancy aquarium store while I was in Austin this weekend and was talking to one of the guys about how big common plecos get compared to some of the different varieties they had-King tiger, jaguar, blue spot etc and he told me that a common pleco isn't even a true pleco?

Is this correct?

No thats not true. But they do get bigger then the other plecos you listed.

well, he mentioned some different type of family or what have you.

Pretty much any pleco that gets big and is brown will get labeled a common. In reality, I believe that there are different types, but I still just call them commons.

thats a pretty good story. I love when they make things up, it entertains me. But i got one better. i was at my local pet store looking at ich medicine, cause i had an outbreak in a tank of mine, and i was looking at the ich medicince that is more sensitive for catfish, and the lady working there came up and told me that no ID sharks are not catfish but actually a species of carp.
