Hey folks! I am just getting back into the aquarist hobby.
I have a 46 gal thats beet running for a while. RIght now there are a few swordtails, black tetras, and a dwarf guarami.

I have been very interested in adding a pair of cichlids to the community. I was at my LFS, and saw a beautiful small cichlid that was very bright yellow, with a small stripe of black on the fins. There were a few others that were nice too.

If I buy them young and in a pair, what variety would you suggest that would work with my setup, (and not be too hard to find)? Also, I'd like for them to be a more interesting or colored variety.

Thanks for any info!

We need some more information to let you know if it will work or not. However the description what you provided has me thinking that its a Riftlake cichlid, and if it is, it won't work in your tank as they need very different water parameters than your current fish. I'm thinking they may be yellow labidichromis.

in my experience it is not so much that the yellow lab wouldn't work in the water parameters or diet plan that you have for your current fish (i am pretty sure he is a hardy fish that will do alright in less than native parameters). my problem with putting one of the usual cichlids you see in lfs in your community tank is that they will shred your gourami and, when it reaches it's max size of 4-5 inches, could very well eat your tetras. i agree with the previous poster that reccomended kribensis or other dwarf south american cichlids, they are quite beautiful and stay small and have much less aggression than african ones.
