Hi,

I am getting ready to cycle my 20 gallon for a community tank and I am having trouble finding information on compatability of some species I am considering. Has anyone had experience with mixing the type of fish I have listed below? I really like the Rasboras so I am really trying to see what fish they would be ok with (IE. No fin nipping, harassment, etc.). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jim

Here are Three possible combos I would like to do:

Stocking Scheme 1:

8 Harlequin Rasboras

3 Platies

4 Cory Cats

Stocking Scheme 2:

8 Harlequin Rasboras

6 Lemon Tetras

4 Cory cats

Stocking Scheme 3:

8 Harlequin Rasboras

6 Blue Danios

4 Cory Cats

Well I would go with the number 2 option. Remember to add only a few every week and not all of them at one time. I would add the cories last though. They would be the most touchy fish that you would add.

How are you going to cycle the tank? What kind of cories are you also thinking about?

Sorry to hijack the thread BUT I am going to be adding panda corries next week ... why do you think they are a 'touchy' fish???

I want to learn all I need to before adding them.

Thanks

butting in here.... what a time I had with pandas!!! Dropped like flies for what seemed to be no reason -- everyone else was doing great but just slightly off water perameters affected them greatly. Maybe because of the fact that they are a smaller breed of corys they are more sensitive? All I know is that it was devistating to watch so many die. I finally worked it out and have 4 that are doing great. They are so cute especially when they all shoal together. If you do decide on pandas just look out for depleted barbels - these were the very first recognizable signs of trouble for me. Bottom feeders in general (IME) are more sensitive to ammonia and everything else just by being so close to the gravel and whatever else settles on the bottom.

Thanks

Thanks for responding.

If I go with Scheme 1, I would cycle with the platies, I heard some people use Bio Spira, but after doing research on this hobby for the past 6 months it seems most people use certain fish to cycle instead of other means. As far as my other schemes with less hardy fish I would cycle with a stronger fish and then give them to my friend who has an established community tank that is larger than mine. I have read so much in the past few months, I would never start anything like this without extensive research. I must admit there are so many conflicting opinions that it gets a bit stressful. I just want to do what is right for the fish. As far as the Cory cats go, I was going to go with either Panda Cories or Dwarf Cories, if I can find them that is. Any other advice would be great as far as any stocking suggestions anyone might have. Thanks again.

Pandas and other Corys do not like the high toxin levels that exist when cycling a tank. So yeah option #2 is good but only add a few fish at a time and Corys when the tank is cycled.

I agree add the corys later. they are very cool fish to have and with that setup there shouldnt b to much fin nipping!
