Community tank suggestions

"If the goldfish stayed in a nonheated tank, with just the two of them, for the year or so that they did, and it was a 29g, without growing anymore than they have, then they cannot possibly be stunted, they just aren't getting bigger. 29g is plenty for two goldfish to have gotten bigger than 6".

<------- That was what I responded to. It is quite possible for a fish to stop growing for a few months. Fish go through growth spurts similiar to young kids do. You never know when they will shoot up within a few months, and you never know when you'll need a new aquarium until yours is overstocked big time. Thats how it works unfortunately...:(

Ok, makes more sense now. I have seen many cases now where the goldies are so much bigger than mine. I will give them the room they need and see what happens. Let me ask this then, If I leave the fancy and comet in, take all else out, can I add a red cap to them? It is my gf's and she has it in a little 5g. I figure the best place for it is with mine. Am I right?

I don't see why not, as long as they are the only fish in the tank. Just keep up regular 25% water changes and you should be all right.

For the time being, yes you could add the goldfish to that 29 gallon tank but only after you sort out the other fish. Keep in mind, your 29 gallon will be stretched to the limits with even two goldfish. Experienced hobbyists will tell you that for one immediate goldfish, you should have 20-30 gallons and then 10 gallons more for each additional goldfish. So in theory, if you had 3 goldfish you should have a minimum size tank of 40-50 gallons.

It might sound silly now, being that the fish are small when you first get them but trust me, they fill out the tank REAL quickly. I always like to use my friend as an example...he had a 30 gallon aquarium with ONE goldfish in there, and he was saying how he'd need to upgrade the tank soon. So as you can tell, these fish get big if they grow properly.

They are in a 40 now, not a 29. I lost my 29 due to keeping my iguana in it for a short time and his pee on the bottom mixed with the heat lamp cracked the bottom...
