Community tank suggestions?

I've got a 75 gallon tank that I want to turn into a community tank. The problem is, there are so many fish out there that I just don't even know where to start. Maybe someone can make some suggestions? I want peaceful fish, nice looking wouldn't hurt, and fun to watch. What's your ideal community tank with those specifications? I just want some ideas on some fish combinations. Thanks for reading

I have a group of rummy nose tetras that I really like. They are very active and always school together. I wish I had room for more. I also enjoy watching my gourami, and he's beautiful! If I could get another tank, I would definately start up a puffer tank! You may want to look into it!

When I first got into fish, I went to sites that weren't forums, and looked at the different fish. Try going to www.liveaquaria.com for picture and basic info on each fish, and then come back to the forums for more specific information about each fish. Also keep in mind whether you want to have a planted tank. Some fish don't do well in planted tanks. Some will eat them, and others will destroy them just for something to do. That gets old after awhile.

How about a school of corydoras? Clown Loaches, fancy guppies, betas, sailfin mollies, various multicoloured tetras, a brown or black knife fish (no clowns!), some dwarf frogs, or a school of swordtails... have fun!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone! I actually went out earlier before I got the chance to check back here and got five neon tetras, five zebra danios, a betta, and a few ghost shrimp. I'd definitely like to put more fish in it though, so I'm going to look into everything you all have suggested.

I would loose the betta and get a whole wack of corys. Get at least 3 of a few differant kinds. Adda a lot of movement to the bottom part of the tank. And add a few cherry barbs for color.

I'd like to keep the betta in there. I felt so bad for him in that little cup, it doesn't seem fair to put him in what seems like the ocean to him just to downgrade him to something smaller, lol.

Do cherry barbs get along with bettas and tetras? The liveaquaria.com site didn't list those on the 'ideal tank mates' list, but I was wondering if anyone had those in the same tank and everything was fine?

The betta will do fine with neons as well as cories if you decide to get some for the bottom of the tank (recommended!). The danios are neat fish, though their zippy fast movements may make your betta nervous. Make sure he has some hiding spots to 'get away' from it all. Also, plastic plants don't do well with bettas. They tear their fins. You should have silk/fabric plants instead. There's still fish you can add to your tank that go with what you've got, but stay away from long finned fish (ie- guppies) because the betta will think it's another betta and fight. Plus fin nippers like serpae tetras are no-no's with bettas.
I'd recommend adding a school of cories, at least five, for sure. They're really neat to watch. Maybe even a few ottos.

Edit-just saw your post. I don't know about cherry barbs, but I'm sure someone else will.

Thanks sdb! Cories are corydoras catfish, right? Sorry, I'm not up with all the nicknames quite yet! If they are, don't catfish get quite large and messy (like goldfish)?
