That's right, great for saltwater set-ups, not great for freshwater. I tried it.......

I have a 10000K bulb (96W) in my 105G FW tank, It looks pretty good with a 6500K (96W) 2-42W spiral cf 6500K and 2 13W red bulbs. the red bulbs are more for sunrise/sunset effect and I have a 13W acitinic for moonlight. It's an Asian Blackwater theme tank and the 10000K helps the color through all the tannins-it is bright white with a hint of blue-the bulb is from AH supply. Steve

Oh, my! That's wild. All I need is a little bulb for my betta and cories in a 10g. I don't like how the incandescent heats up the water, so I leave it off and have algae trouble instead. Your set-up sounds awesome.

Go here and click on "screw-in compact flourecent's" they carry 5100K bulbs of ALL sizes and 6500K 27W up to 42W. No I don't work for them, but maybe I should get a cut for all the free run I give them.

The screw-in 13W spiral type bulbs you get at Home Depot, Canadian Tire, or Walmart can fit, but it's a bit tight; the base and the bulb just barely clear the reflector on my Hagen 10g light strip. A bit too close for me.

I don't know what brand is your 10g, but on the Hagen 10g, you can raise the socket away from the reflector a bit. Just loosen the nut that's holding the socket and insert a spacer of some kind between the socket and the reflector.

Hope this helps.

The 10,000K "washed out" the colors of the aquarium. I had that bulb when I first got my CF lights. I'm so glad Custom SeaLife took back the 10,000K bulbs! Those 10,000K's were too "white" and bright, if that makes sense... I know it sure made my tank look very unnatural.
