I'm trying to light a 50 gallon tank. I'm thinking of using 4 or 5 Compact Flourescent Flood Lights. These things are rated at 23 watts.

Has anyone had any experience with these lights? I can get some with a temperature of 5000 k from home depot or walmart. Can plants grow in this type of lighting? It'll be like 400 watts of incandescent lighting in the tank.

Not sure what you mean by 'flood lights', but if you're talking about those screw-in CFs, they work well.
If you're talking about something different, please describe.
Surprising that you could find them with a 5000K rating. I looked high and low for them and had no luck at all.

That's what I thought you meant, and yes you should be very happy with that light. I have one that, I think is 23watts over my little 5gal. tank and it's supporting Glosso and E. Tenellus very well. The only thing I wish was different is that the K rating is 3300 and it's kind of a yellow cast. I like the 5000 - 6000K tubes better.

I use those in 2 of my tanks, 3-42W 6500K bulbs over a 40G breeder tank and 2 of the same bulbs over my 105-in conjunction with 2 96W AH supply bulbs-1 6500K, 1 10,000K and 2 13W red AH supply bulbs. They are more like a MH pendant-not as bright 'natch, but you get the rippling effect, I use them in shop lights with alum reflectors. Snafu-I like the track light idea  I may go that way over my 40, It looks ghetto as it is :o djlen check out www.1000bulbs.com for those bulbs, I just did-13.38 USD per bulb, they now stock 55W 5000K bulbs for 19.01!

Steve, that site has some good possibilities. Did you see that they also sell reflectors for the 42 watts/5600K bulbs?
Very impressive. And no minimum order.
I'm looking for just that wattage and K rating.

I got some 19 Watters from Home Depot in 6500K. Great bulbs. I like that track lighting idea... how much did you spend to install that?

Aaron

Actually the track was a 10 ft. section left over from a remodeling job several years ago. I just cut off what I needed.
The bulbs came in a three pack for 18 bucks.
check out ebay for different styles of lights. The ones I saw were from $4 to $20 for each fixture, so low end the whole setup should cost $60 (3 fixtures, wiring, track, and bulbs) to whatever you want to spend....

Ebay track lights

This seller has lots of different styles and track kits....
