Compatibility of Clown Loaches & Angels

I kept clowns with angels for a month or 2. It wasn't that the loaches attacked the angels, they just scared the bejeezus out of them at night. The angels did a lot of splashing & hit the tank top, just a matter of time until somebody got hurt.

Also clowns like a significant current, IME angels don't.

Loaches are by nature a docile and unobtrusive addition to any community tank.
That is not applicable in general. Syncrossus are very aggressive as are the very popular modestas.
I think you need to re-evaluate the loaches tank mates as I believe that the clowns have been wrongfully accused.
This I agree with. I've never seen clowns to be particularly nippy at all. I'd love to see one CL owner tell us that his/her clowns ripped their tankmates' fins to shreds.

There are plenty of reasons why clowns were often suggested not to be mixed with angels. They are far too active for the angels and requiring gentle currents that the angels do not. It's not about the aggression issue at all.

My thoughts exactly Lupin! However when clown loaches are kept in small number and in small spaces they can become territorial and aggressive. This may have led to what happened. IMO it would be best to remove the clown loaches from that tank.

Oh Boy:eek3: Guess what I went and did today before reading all these replies. Yip, I got 3 more clown loaches to occupy the other 2 so now I have 5.
Right now they are in my 55 gal. Was planning on a new 125 gal (loach tank)set up by Christmas, but I guess I better move my plans ahead some. For now I think I will just move the Angels to my 35 gal. ( if the clowns continue to nip) The 3 new ones are hideing right now and the older 2 are on good behavior for the moment. My only worry is I have a Angel in the 35 gal already that is king of any tank you put him in. These 3 Angels have been togeather before and I had to seperate them. Any suggestions?

Get the king angel out of the tank and allow the others to establish themselves there first before you put back the king angel to that tank.

I know people who keep Clowns with Angels without any problems. Clown Loaches tend to be remarkably benign creatures unless you are an Amano shrimp or something similar.

When they are young they are naturally inquisitive and will "feel" other fish with their barbels. This may alarm fish like angels. They aren't being harmful, but the angels may interpret it that way and get spooked.

Kept in a group as they should be young clowns will tend to mess with one another more and not be a problem. There will always be exceptions with any species but generally Clowns are not "nippy".

I'm very suprised that vic46 has not had issues with his Skunks because they are usually unholy terrors. As Lupin says Clowns need a lot of current and this will not be appreciated by Angels. This factor alone is one that should keep them in separate aquariums rather than any behavioural problem.

My 125 gallon Clown tank turns over 3000 gph so you can imagine Angels being blown around in that right?

Martin.

Clown Loach and Angels

I have two clown loach who appear to be happy, healthy and extremely entertaining - they live happily with two Koi angels, - they don't nip, in fact they really ignore the other tank inhabitants and go about their business - none of my fish interfere withthem, or then with the other fish; if there is a bully in the tank it is one of the Angels - he likes his territory and chases others away - but only when it suits him!:)

I have never found clowns to be nippy I have 5 clowns with my discus and all get on very well.
Maybe not but our experiences differ and loaches in general are often very inquisitive.:)
