compatibility with Kribs or Rams

Hello all, I am going to be setting up a 36 gallon tank soon and I'd like to have some Kribs and/or Rams as the main attraction. My first question: is it ok to mix Kribs and Rams, like a pair of each, or should I just stick with one of them? And should I limit it to 1 pair, or add more than a pair? Also, I'd like to add in some clown loaches, hatchet fish, and maybe a redtail shark. Are there any compatibility issues here? I'd like to have a school of neons or cardinals, but from what I've read, they prefer softer water than the Kribs and Rams.. Any advice on this or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can't get much softer water than what the rams like. Are you thinking Bolivian or Blues? I wouldn't do kribs and rams, I'd do one or the other. How big is the floor space of your tank? If it is 36 inches or more, you could go with 2 pairs of rams, even one pair Bolivian, one pair Blue. However, if it is smaller than 36, I'd stick to one pair.

oops, correction in tank size

Thanks for the advice.. I did make a mistake in the tank size.. It's gonna be a 46 gallon, not 36 gallon, and the dimension is approx 36x15x20. I hadn't thought much about Bolivian or Blue, I like them both, but think I prefer the Blue, but it would depend what's available also.. And i haven't even got the tank yet, I want to make sure it has time to cycle before i bring home the fish.. I was actually leaning towards the Kribs though. From what I've read they seem a little easier to take care of than the Rams. Any advice on whether these fish would be compatible with the other fish I was interested in (clown loaches, redtail shark, hatchet fish)? Thank you very much!

46 is big enough for a community and pair of kribs or rams, not both. the kribs will pick on the rams...

im no expet but i actually have a breeding pair of kribs with a ram. i wasnt told it was a bad idea until after i had them together, but they actually dont have any problems. my kribs are occupied with the yoyos they need to chase (even though they cant catch them) and the ram pretty much keeps to itself. IDK why but i have had really good luck with all of my fish and there agression. in my experience i have had 0 problems. I always keep my fish well and i think that helps

I've had and still have both. Kribs are the easiest. I have 2 pairs and they never bother anyone. They do stick to the low plants and caves. I also have 5 Bolivans which are also pretty hardy. They come to the front of the tank all the time and only the males fight with each other.

Blue Ram and Golden Rams are the best looking but they are also the most $$$$ and the most friagile. I've had NO luck with either type on numerous occasions. I've never lost an Krib or Bolivan yet!!!
