my mom want to restock her 55. she is still looking at her selection of fish at the pet shops. Anglefish are a must. she also is interested in http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Oddball, Peacock Gudgeons.htm, and rainbowfish, specifically threadfins, celebes, and Boesemani rainbows, she is also very found of yoyo loach. would all of them work well water and behavoir wise?

I wouldn't mix rainbows and angels, at least not those rainbows. Threadfins only get to 2" and with those long fins might become a target for either the angels or, possibly, the Boesemani. I have no experience with threadfins and do not know for sure if Boes will go after them or not. Have another tank ready if you decide to mix the two.

Boesemani swim in the same area as the angels do and won't like them in their face.

Celebes are not members of the Rainbowfish family, Melanotaeniidae. They belong to the Sailfin Silversides family, Telmatherinidae. Both belong to the Atheriniformes order of fishes. In other words, I can't help you there since I only keep rainbowfishes.

Also, these are all schooling fish and need to be in groups of six of their own specie. Only the threadfins and Boes are rainbowfish, and they are not in the same family so don't count on them schooling together. You really should not mix them and you don't have room in a 55g for 3 schools of 6 each.

From what I've read, peacock gudgeons can be very grumpy and semi-aggressive. I plan on getting some, but am putting them in with my bigger rainbows.

I second that. but also angels like peaceful tanks. I had some rainbowfish and an angelfish in a 55g and the angelfish was always nervous and hiding in a corner because of the movement.

My rainbowfish was really aggressive towards a tiger barb I used to have until my ropefish finally finished it off (the barb, that is). Are rainbowfish somewhat aggressive?
 
I don't have any experience with rainbows, but I have kept yoyo loaches with a variety of other fish and they have always kept to themselves. I've never seen them cause problems with other fish and they should be compatible as far as water conditions, too. I would get 3 for a 55G, they like to have some company.
 
I think it is funny how everyone has different experiences with their fish. I truly believe fish exhibit different behaviors depending on their tank environment. Including:

1. Water quality
2. Lighting
3. Tank mates

I currently have two angelfish and they are the most aggressive fish I have. They chase the other fish around (GlowLites, ScissorTail Rasboras, & Black Skirt Tetras)

I have never had rainbows before so I do not know how they will react with the angelfish. I have had Yo-Yo loaches before and found them to be very aggressive with each other & the other fish. I had two Yo-Yo loaches who would constantly fight. If they were not chasing each other they were after the other fish in the tank.

I think yours were from the wrong side of the tracks. ;)

Edit: Or maybe I have some kind of sedative in my water supply, because now that I think about it I have the world's mellowest kenyii, too. ;)

They can be, depending on the type and, from what I've read, whether they are kept solitary or not. They really need to be with a school of their own specie.

I'm assuming yours was probably a Boesemani and a male. Male Boes don't put up with much and tiger barbs can be a PITA.

You know Red K - I did buy those fish in a bad neighborhood. Maybe there is a correlation to what kind of neighborhood your LFS store is in vs. the behavior of your fish. :laugh:
