I think I found a great deal on a R/O unit. I have never owned one so i'm not sure if it is what I need for my tank. Does this look like what I need? Thanks for the help!!

Do you have any info on it -- specs stamped / printed on it? It looks like a system commonly used for drinking water, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be ok for making tank water if all you want is RO. If nothing else, I'd replace the filters (guessing it's a used unit) and flush the membrane before making any water for your tank.

It is a used unit that was used on a refrigerator (did I spell that right?) the guy wants $20 for the whole setup. There is also a R/O DI unit for $75 that is only 4 months old. Would The R/O DI be a better deal?

heres the $75 R/O DI
Photo shows Barracuda system with the optional In-Line TDS Meter which is not included with this unit - what is this?

go for the RO/DI unit...the other units are not up to scratch compared to RO units and they are the standard house hold water purification systems...They sell them commonly here in the UK quite cheap, especially on fleebay....

The TDS meter shows the " Total Dissolved Solids " of the water..TDS is refering to minerals and metals etc etc that are in the water...typically, you measure the TDS of the water going in and the TDS of the water going out...This is also a good way to check if the RO/DI unit is working correctly..

The refrig unit pic isn't legible for me, even if I download it and zoom in. What size are the cartridges on that unit? If they aren't a standard size (10" x 2.5" is a very common standard size), you may be limited in the cartridges you can choose from and the places to purchase them.

The second unit is a standard sized RO/DI unit commonly used in aquarium hobby. For that price, it's a good deal considering a quick search on the internet resulted in new retail prices being at minimum 2x what is being asked for the used unit. To give you a general idea on the cost of a of single change-out (both pre-filters and a DI cartridge), scroll down to the $35 Two Filter Package Plus DI on this page: http://www.thefilterguys.biz/filter_packages.htm

A TDS meter is not a requirement to make it work. It's good to have one to monitor the quality of the water. To me, a separate handheld stick TDS meter is a better option and more reliable than the inline units (how do you ever expect to clean an inline unit without draining / disassembling the plumbing on the RO/DI unit?)

No. You do not need the TDS to make it work.

The TDS only measures the total dissolved solids in the outgoing water. Tells you when you need to change the sediment or carbon filters.
