Roan is right, if i was to put you in a 10x10 room for the rest of your life i bet you would "thrive" but also be pissed off and depressed alot of the time also.
I just got my first betta and stuck him in my extra 10 gallon, he seems happy, eating,swiming and all the works...But if i had my choice i would put him in something bigger because the more room the better in most cases.

My parents put me in the closet and I'm fine....Uh but that's another story for a different forum. I think thier natural habitat is the rice patties in Japan ( someone correct me if I'm wrong and I'm sure someone will ) and I think they're probably a little bit bigger than a 1 gal bowl. So I would think in this case bigger would be better. Since beta's can thrive on very low O2 levels people often mistake that fact for how they should keep them.
It sounds like you want to take good care of your fish, so of course you want to be sure he has clean filtered water and a steady temp...both will keep him healthy.
Bettas are not used to current if they have been raised in the stinking little cups that they sell them in the fish stores. You can gradually acclimize your betta to current by reducing the flow out of the filter ...or having a filter that doesn't have a strong current so he can get used to it. Fluctuations in temp will make them sick and suceptible to disease.

thailand area actually there you go . . . rice paddies and shallow pools of water are natural for them as in as long as its bigger than those stupid cups they sell them in its much improved . .. they have room to flare and w/e but bettas honsetly wouldnt know the difference, they arent picky and they are not like us at all . . . so why try to insult my fish keeping when you use a human as a comparison to a flippin fish ? now if i kept them in like the toilet i would understand you being all omg you sinner but not whe i feep them in bowls that they are fine in . . . i dont get some people these days . . . .
You seem to be missing the point that they can 'live' in a tiny bowl but 'thrive' in a better tank.

Because you make assumptions instead of doing research to see what's best for an animal in your care.

I really love it when someone only seems to care about the quality of life when it applies to human beings. Just because an animal OR human can survive in a crappy environment doesn't mean they should be kept in one.

I agree with roan 100%, but some advice to BettaBaby, Go out buy yourself a nice heater designed for your tank, keep up the water changes,keep the fish healthy and do what needs to be done to keep the fish healty
i havent ever had a disease and my bettas are thriving . . . . you are making this way to complicated for her, i did keep some of my bettas in a bigger tank and thery acted the same as when in a smaller one . . . why would you waste a 10 gallon or higher on a fish ? i wouldnt if they seemed happy in something smaller which they do . . . you guys are worse than tree-huggerrs . . but w/e my fish hate me because i treat them horribly . .. i guess ill just go to hell for not overdoing it . . . which you people apparently think is good . .. . my friend has a betta in her 50 gallon . . it just stays in the corner . . . . but yes however you want to do it . . . its a matter of personal opinion . . .
