Ok, so I haven't had my own computer for about 2 years now and well...I can't remember what kind of programs I had for "cleaning" my computer. I just have a cheapie wal-mart one for now so I know I need to maintain it but it is all I could get at the time.
So please suggest away for me. Oh if ya need to know it has windows 7

Thanks soooo much in advance :)

adaware

avast antispyware

spybot search and destroy

these are a few that I use and they are free.

spybot, malwarebytes, and your trusty windows firewall and you should be just fine. :)

Dishwasher...a very mild detergent...short wash, not the pan/pot scrubber one....let air dry vice the forced heat cycle.

The best spyware program I have ever seen is super anti spyware. add a dot com to the end of a name and you can download a free version. (not a trial version you later have to pay for). I have been using it for years and am thrilled with it.

I have cleaned computers with it immediately after running spybot and found hundreds of infected files spybot missed.

spyware and virus programs are of course subject to personal preference.

One more note is virus protection. most internet marketers I have come across are using AVG. You can get it from their website or you can also purchase it at walmart.

Hope this helps.

Hijackthis is pretty sweet.

hijack this is nice, if you know what you are looking at.
AdAware is pretty good, and fairly automated.
malwarebytes is awesome, I recommend it to everyone.
REG Scrub xp is also excellent. (there are vista and 7 versions)
Spybot S&D is ok...

most "free' antivirus programs are just crap.
An exception to this is AVG antivirus. Your ISP probably provides some free antivirus software from mcaffe or norton.

I hide behind a router with a hardware firewall. I dont use the windows firewall.

likewise. a hardware firewall, spybot, and malwarebytes, no "antivirus" whatsoever. I can't even remember the last time I had anything malicious on my computer.

also, being careful which sites you visit and what links you click on helps immensely.

I agree, most free programs are crap. Superantispyware has a paid version as well which is why the free one is so good. It is a marketing ploy to get you to upgrade.

I just don't upgrade.

Mcaffee is a good program but a resource hog.

I won't even go into Norton after my experiences

I agree with those statements.

Right now I'm using Webroot. It's ok IMO but I find it hard to trust since it continuously comes back without finding anything.
