Last night I did a 50% water change and can't seem to get the ammonia or nitrites down. I just tested the water to find the ammonia at .25 and the nitrite at 1.0.
Could it be that I need to add more Prime to the tap water? I add the suggested amount (2 drops per gallon), but the ammonia in the pure tap water is at 1.0.
I just don't understand why my water levels are so off even after I do water changes.
Overdosing prime is ok. As long as you are adding enough is all that matters. The extra prime will not hurt anything. You may have to do more than one water change a day this is not uncommon when doing a fishy cycle. If thee is anyone you know who has a freshwater aquarium that is cycled and diesease free ask for some filter media or gravel, keep it wet so the bacteria does not die. Filter media you can cram in your filter. Gravel you can put in an unwhashed pantyhose and swish it in the tank, drop it inside and every few hours swish it around. the bacteria will help speed up your cycle. The pleco will produce alot of waste for a tank that size. not to mention the other fishes poo. Also keep feeding at a minimum.
