Conflicting ideas on Discus food.....

I agree that a variety is best, and feed all my fish a wide variety. The discus get:

home-made beefheart/shrimp/fish/veggie mix that's vitamin fortified
color bits
frozen bloodworms
frozen brine shrimp
live black worms
chopped earthworms

I feed twice daily for the adults and fast all my fish, except fry and juvies, one day a week. I rotate the foods so that they get different combinations. I make the beefheart mix high in veg matter. It also contains spirulina.

I agree .. mix it up..if you go with homemade formulas that include beef heart..make sure you trim away as much of the fat as you can.

;)

This is what we use at the moment.

3 lbs. ground beef (7% fat or leaner)
1/2 lb. cod (skinless)
1/2 lb. shrimp (peeled)
2 table spoons peas (from a can)
Everything raw, I put it through a meat grinder and then in the mixer.

In the bowl add:
25% flake food (by volume)
1 ounces of Red Paprika powder
+ vitamins (7 tablets)
and 2 table spoons Oatmeal.

Vitamins I use human A to Zinc from Centrum, put them in a coffee grinder and mix in the food.
But you can use anything they sell in the fish shop.

We freeze it in cans of 5 to 6 lbs (1 feeding lol)
You can freeze it in ziplock bags (fish bags work too) freeze it and taw what you need the next day.

hope this helps,

For some reason, I am drooling at those, Hans. Do they come with garlic?

*wipes his saliva*

That's really impressive serving.

You know, I buy the stuff for the food all at BJ's every 10 to 14 days we make a 100 to 110 lbs food. Big car, 12 packs of ground beef, 6 bags shrimps, 6 bags fish, etc.........I love the question, "wauwwwwwww big party?"
Naaaahhhhh FISH FOOD, if I would make a movie of the faces of the people who asked the question (every time at least 2) I would win 10K at funniest home video FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garlic in the food makes only sense if you take at least 50% of the total mix in PURE Fresh Garlic,

I have a question to add to this: With feeding colorbits, I've heard to only feed them to fish with red/orange coloring because it is specifically meant to enhance those colors. I've been told not to feed colorbits to blue, yellow or green discus... any thoughts? Is that true? I just bought a huge can of them before hearing that, and I have a blue diamond and a yellow diamond on their way. What would you suggest? Have you guys fed colorbits to discus of blue, green, or yellow color? And what happens if you do feed them with colorbits?

Hi Becky,

you can feed all colors of Discus with the color bits, no problem.

EXCEPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the yellow, most of those (the yellow) need a liver based food to stay Yellow,
