conflicting info on yo yo loach?

They were about 3/4 inch long when I got them and were almost identical. You could distictly see the Y O Y O on their patterns. Over the years one has gotten many more striations in the markings. It may be some sort of subspecies? I haven't researched them much, mostly just watched their interactions with different tank mates over the years and enjoyed them. Rosie calls them puppies with fins. I think that fits.

With excellent water conditions and lots of good food, you can expect your locahes to hit 5"+ within 6 months....as an example, my current herd of yoyos were all less than 1" three months ago, and are all now 4" and still growing fast....I expect them all to be a full 5" by March.

Thats very fast growth. I'd probably say that your conditions are probably much better than the average, not that everyone shouldnt strive to keep the best conditions. But doubling in size like 3 times or more in 3 months, wow! That almost rivals the common pleco.

But it is how most fish are designed to grow...the first 75% of growth happening quickly...the bigger they are the more quickly, the more they can eat, the less that can eat them, and the more quickly they can spawn.

"Quickly" is rather subjective. And were not talking 75%... more like 600% (tripling in length would be 300% then doubling in girth would be double that). [Edit: I guess you meant 75% of thier total lifetime growth, not a 75% gain, but still a 600% gain in 3 months just seems rather quick!] I admit when my yoyo's were first put in the tank my tank was less than ideal (before I was on any forum), I'd have to guess they took the better part of a year to get to around 4", and havent much grown since then, maybe 4"-5" now (I havent put a tape measure or anything on em). I am sure they could have grown faster in ideal conditions, but I was somewhat surprised by the 3-month growth posted.

Most loaches grow slowly. Clowns reach 12", but not for many years.
