Confused about salt in FW

John, I think most salt is collected from evaporated seawater. With that said, It's a completely unnecessary prophylactic additive. As pointed out, it has its uses as an ich treatment and short term dip. Since there is nothing particularly esoteric inside that API box, I maintain the belief that it resides on the lfs shelves for the primary purpose of separating hobbyists from their cash.

Actually most salt refined into pure NaCl for table salt is mined. Instant gratification.

oh yeah, well my dad can kick your dads butt! (take it easy guys. we're just talking about salt for crying out loud)

I really should've taken some Chemistry in highschool. lol. So, basically "Aquarium Salt" is pretty much the same as table salt, and table salt is fine to use instead of buying aquarium salt.

However, since I have scaleless fish salt is out of the question anyhow, correct?

Thanks

Correct.

It should be noted that if you want to use salt in your fw aquarium and not pay the premium price for it at the LFS then you should get Kosher Salt not regular table salt. Kosher salt does not contain iodine and almost all the cheap table salts do.

The salt "Mines" are where the oceans once existed and left their deposits as they evaporated or retreated. No special wizardry about it. It is still the same "Ocean Salt" imbedded with different minerals (depending on location), which are later processed out to leave a more basic form of salt.

Since salt is one of the basic ingredients that creates electricity in the body of all living things, it's a pretty basic need. Like anything else, too much of something is not always beneficial.

I don't use it in my tanks unless absolutely necessary. Unless your fish have a medical or environmental need for it, don't bother using it.

There's also an excellent article on using salt in freshwater aquariums from Practical Fish Keeping

Frequently asked questions on using salt

Salt has been scientifically proven to have a number of benefits. Matt Clarke scours the journals and speaks to industry experts for the latest on the subject.

Many people are very anti-salt. Why is this, and why on earth would you want to add salt to a freshwater tank, anyway?

Unfortunately, there are lots of myths and old wives' tales surrounding the use of salt. While it is sometimes used inappropriately, it does have a number of genuine, scientifically valid uses in the aquarium for treating health problems, tackling water quality problems and minimising stress, especially during transport. Most of these work by salt's effect on the osmoregulation of freshwater fish.

As stated, there are times to use salt but going back to the OP, to use salt in a FW set up just to use salt in a FW set up? No.

To paraphrase an old lifelong aquarist named RTR; "For the iodide in table salt to reach a level in the aquarium that would be an issue, so much table salt would have to be added that the fish would have long since been pickled in brine." Table salt is fine to use in an aquarium for ich treatment.
