Hello,

I am totally confused, I thought I had a 20 gallon tank 36"x12"x12". I have just gone into a thread which was requesting suggestions of stocking a 20 gallon tank 24"x12"x12, if the later size is the case (jumping for joy) as this means I have more gallons to play with. Can some one enlighten me, Thanks

The little calculation done by Roan is correct.
A "20G" with inside measurements of 30x12x12 only holds 18.7 Gallons of water.
You can do these calculations on a lot of tanks and will find that many are off - the "20G" is more a product name than the actual water volume.

Tanks in the USA are sized in nominal volumes by the exterior measurements. The actual volume is always less than the nominal, sometimes significantly so. For laughs, calculate the volume of a "55" and then measure its actual volume.

The figures Roan Art and Hannys_Papa gave are correct.
