I was just wondering- can a platy and a molly mate and produce babies? I have a male platy that is trying to mate with a molly. I have 2 female platys and everytime they get near Miss Molly he chases them away and goes right back to her side. Is he confused? Or in love?
No they won't mate and produce babies as far as I know. Could just be that your female platies are already pregnant and your molly isn't. If there is an "open" female in the tank the male will probably go after her regardless. Male mollies and platies are known to try to mate with anything. I wouldn't worry about it unless your molly is getting stressed too much by the male chasing her.
Thankyou!
Would it make any difference if the molly is already pregnant? As a matter of fact every female in the tank is preggers except one platy and the male acts like he wants nothing to do with her.
Difference..pertaining to what? I imagine he's just an amorous fellow. Sometimes if a male and female platy are different colored i.e. red male and white female the male won't show as much or no interest. I have platies and I've noticed that from time to time. They will pursue ones that look similar to them first. If however your male and female are the same color then..I don't know. I wouldn't worry about it unless as I said the female molly starts seeming stressed.
